The Sail Space
Year 2 Semester 1 - 2021
St Andrews Sail Club is a little way out of the town centre, in a nondescript stone building. Our Second Year project was a retrofit and extension project, aiming to resolve a number of issues that members had. These ranged from the building being too cold to the interior being too small to store boats, but the members were split on a solution as the older generation was attracted to the existing building's rustic charm.
My proposal aimed to attract new members and increase awareness of the club by proposing an extension with a series of sails on the roof, which are hyperbolic-paraboloid in shape. This shape allows for a simple structure for the sails, made of straight pieces of wood, which the older members to help construct the extension in a similar way to their involvement with the existing club's extensions and repairs.
