Spiralis Art and Sculpture
Year 1 Semester 2 - 2021
Given a selection of local artists, this project envisioned a narrow gap site, just off of Byres Road in the fashionable West End of Glasgow. To attract visitors, I was keen to design a gallery that had a radical form, with a more traditional materiality. I was also keen to justify the difference in height by tieing in other elements with the horizontal detail of the surroundings.
Internally, rather than having traditional floors, the gallery took inspiration from the Guggenheim with a slowly spiralling journey up the building, to a cafe at the top. A void from top to bottom allows visitors to both observe and be observed, whilst paintings, sculptures and videography all have suitable display spaces.
