Migrating to Knowledge
Year 2 Semester 2 - 2022
Situated within the grounds of St Andrews Cathedral, Migrating to Knowledge is a design for an ornithological library that acknowledges the critical role Fife plays for migratory bird populations. The initial concept imagined the library to act as a “tree of knowledge “, with firm roots of public spaces that allowed for lectures and events on birds and other wildlife.
I decided on the Cathedral site due to the amount of green space it offers, and it’s potential to allow visitors to witness the birds they are researching. However, I feel the decision is further justified if you consider the parallels between pilgrimage and migration, and how the library acts as an abstract reinterpretation of the cathedral’s symbolic purpose.
