Donamus Aquam
Year 3 Semester 2 - 2023
This project aimed to reconnect the severed North East of Glasgow by utilising the route of the tunnelled Molendinar River to create a new series of water-based attractions, including a water play park and a swimming pool. Using this overarching masterplan, the design then focused on an aquarium and water performance space, within the listed remains of the Provan Gasworks site.
The aquarium is spatially arranged around three key zones: Lochs and Rivers, At the Coast and In the Ocean. These create a linear path through the attraction, educating from a local to a global scale. Dotted around the site are a series of miniature exhibits within a new public park, each highlighting an endangered Scottish habitat.
The project also idenitified a gap in current aquatic exhibitions - freediving and performance mermaiding. This whimsical addition added a large amount of complexity to the project, by requiring the design to respond to the needs of the fish, the performers, and the visitors of the aquarium.
